OpenAI’s consumer hardware division will be led by the previous Meta AR chief

With her extensive experience in developing hardware for the metaverse, Caitlin Kalinkowski will be able to lead a new consumer hardware group for OpenAI, which is one of the leading artificial intelligence companies. For example, her experience includes developing Meta’s Orion augmented reality glasses, as well as a long-term stint at Apple, where she was a designer and engineer. A TechCrunch report confirms that she has been working in the virtual reality field for 10 years. Her previous project (Orion glasses) was not intended for the mass consumer and was more of a realization of the company’s ambitions in the metaverse. But the work at OpenAI will definitely be focused on consumer robotics.

Kalinkowski herself writes in social media posts that she is very excited to be part of OpenAI and work in the field of robotics and consumer hardware. At the same time, her official position is still unknown. What is clear is that the division under her leadership will become the company’s start in the hardware sector.

Other companies’ attempts to introduce AI into the real world (Humane’s pin, Google and Amazon’s speakers) have certainly attracted some attention from the average consumer. But even OpenAI’s GPT chat has not yet reached the mass market in its entirety. One of the main goals of the new division will be to speed up this process. The company intends not only to develop and manufacture its own hardware but also to use Caitlin Kalinkowski’s previous experience of cooperation with Meta and Apple to license certain technologies.
